The craftsmanship of the Biltmore Estate left me in absolute awe. Walking through its halls, I couldn’t help but marvel at the intricate details—the hand-carved woodwork, the ornate stone facades, and the delicate ironwork that seemed to whisper stories of the artisans who poured their souls into every piece. It’s not just a building, it’s a masterpiece born from a community of skilled craftspeople, many brought over from Europe, who dedicated their lives to creating something timeless. Sketching it feels like a way to honor their artistry, capturing the spirit of their work and the beauty they left behind.

Flowers captivate me because they are fleeting, delicate beauties—a vivid reminder of how quickly time passes and the importance of savoring the present moment. When I sketch an iris, like the one in this piece, I’m drawn to its vibrant purples, splashes of pink, and the way its petals seem to dance with life. Each brushstroke feels like a celebration of its ephemeral nature, a way to preserve its grace and energy before it fades. Sketching irises is my way of pausing time, capturing their essence, and honoring the beauty of the moment.

Hi, I’m Jason Nicholas—architect, artist, and teacher with a passion for capturing the soul of the built world through loose, expressive sketching. From the towering skyscrapers of New York City to the charm of coastal shacks, my art celebrates the personality and stories of architecture.
When I sketch, I feel grounded. It’s a meditative process that allows me to slow down and truly see what’s in front of me. The act of translating what I see into lines and shapes creates a connection between my hand, my eye, and my heart. It’s not about perfection, it’s about capturing the personality of a place—the quirks, the imperfections, the story it tells.
Sketching also brings me joy because it’s a way to share my perspective with others. Through my sketches, I hope to inspire people to see the beauty in the everyday, to pause and appreciate the details we often overlook. Whether it’s a towering skyscraper or a quiet park bench, every scene has a story waiting to be told. And for me, sketching is how I tell those stories. It’s my way of preserving moments, emotions, and memories in a way that feels deeply personal and alive.

Jason's story shows us that art is more than just a skill—it’s a way to see, connect, and celebrate the world around us. From sketching as a child to inspiring others through teaching and social media, he demonstrates that creativity can lead to profound connections and unforgettable experiences.
